The Asia-Pacific region is home to seven of the ten fastest-growing tourist economies between 2024 and 2026, according to the Travel & Tourism Development Index 2026 from the World Economic Forum. This dynamic reshuffles the deck: the Asian destinations worthy of attention are no longer necessarily those found on traditional lists.

Here, we provide a breakdown by operational criteria, targeting countries where the combination of visa accessibility, wellness infrastructure, and cultural density creates the conditions for a truly memorable trip.

Visa regimes and entry facilitation: the first filter to apply

Comparing entry regimes before comparing temples or beaches changes the planning logic. Thailand has extended its visa exemptions up to 45 days, making it one of the most accessible destinations for an extended stay.

Vietnam has followed a similar trajectory with the extension of its e-visa. Malaysia, on the other hand, has seen a marked recovery in its international arrivals since the end of health restrictions.

The relaxation of visa requirements directly affects the duration and quality of a stay. Having 45 days without a visa does not produce the same itinerary as 15 days: the traveler can access less crowded provinces and can explore multiple regions without haste.

Several resources detail these destinations from the perspective of on-the-ground experience, as can be read on the En Route pour l’Asie website, which lists itineraries suited for these longer formats.

Laos and Malaysia are among the countries whose tourism competitiveness has significantly improved according to the same World Economic Forum report. Sandwiched between Thailand and Vietnam, Laos remains underrepresented in mainstream guides, even though its geographical position facilitates its integration into a multi-country circuit.

Wellness in Asia: an offering that structures entire stays

Wellness is no longer an add-on to beach travel. It is a reason for independent travel, with a clientele that organizes its itinerary around long retreats.

Thailand relies on an established infrastructure: traditional massage, meditation retreats around Chiang Mai. India and Bali now offer a structured offering that goes beyond the niche, with multi-week stays centered on daily practice.

What distinguishes a credible wellness destination

  • Practitioners trained locally in a codified tradition (ayurveda in India, traditional Thai medicine), and not just international hotel spas reproducing a standardized model
  • A natural environment that is an integral part of the protocol: Balinese rice terraces, northern Thai mountains, Kerala backwaters
  • Real air connectivity from regional hubs (Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur) without multiple connections

Sri Lanka deserves special attention in this segment. Despite its modest size, it combines beaches, archaeological sites, and an ayurvedic tradition comparable to that of southern India, with significantly lower accommodation costs.

Overtourism in Asia: assess saturation before booking

Classic circuits in Vietnam or Japan concentrate flows on a few iconic sites, such as Ha Long Bay, Kyoto, Ho Chi Minh City, to the detriment of the actual experience. This phenomenon is not new, but the post-pandemic recovery has amplified it in certain corridors.

We observe that informed travelers are shifting their itineraries to secondary provinces. In Vietnam, Ha Giang or the central regions offer cultural and scenic density at least equivalent to coastal circuits, without the associated tourist pressure.

Three criteria to measure the saturation of a destination

  • The ratio between local hotel capacity and the volume of arrivals in high season: an imbalance results in inflated prices and accelerated degradation of sites
  • The existence of access quotas for natural or heritage sites (some Indonesian parks or Cambodian temples already limit daily entries)
  • The diversity of source markets: a destination dependent on a single national clientele experiences sharp fluctuations in attendance

The tourism recovery is now driven by new source markets, beyond Chinese, European, or North American clientele. This diversification makes some destinations more stable in their attendance and less exposed to violent seasonal peaks.

Multi-country circuits in Southeast Asia: combinations that work

Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam form the most coherent triptych in geographical and administrative terms. Passable land borders, compatible visa regimes, well-served air hubs from Bangkok or Hanoi: the logistical conditions are met.

Singapore serves as an entry point for insular Southeast Asia. From this hub, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines are accessible via short flights. The choice of entry point determines the logic of the circuit: Bangkok leads to the mainland, Singapore to the islands.

India constitutes a journey in itself. Combining India with Southeast Asia in the same circuit remains logistically less relevant unless one has several weeks. Rajasthan, Kerala, or Varanasi each deserve a dedicated stay, given the density of history and landscapes concentrated there.

Operational criteria (visa, saturation, wellness infrastructure, air connectivity) determine the actual quality of a stay far more than the mere photogenicity of landscapes. We recommend establishing these criteria before any destination selection, even before opening a guide.
